Swell Media is pleased to announce that we’ve teamed up with TEDxPiscataquaRiver as a sponsor of this year’s event. We see the organization and its events as vital to the community and are excited to help spark conversations in Portsmouth about the latest innovations, perspectives, and issues relevant today.
We jumped on the chance to help organize this year’s TEDxPiscataquaRiver because Portsmouth is at the core of all we do here at Swell Media. We love this city, from its culture and innovation, to the friendly, hardworking folks we pass every day just outside our office. We wanted to give back to the community, so we decided to help bring together and disseminate the freshest ideas and perspectives from both sides of the Piscataqua.
The event will take place all day Sept. 8 at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth. The presenters include local and national experts, speaking on topics ranging from business and innovation, to music, faith, and education. Some of the speakers are Alex Myers, a writer and teacher who was the first openly transgender student at both Phillips Exeter and Harvard; Celia Woodsmith, a Grammy-nominated performer and songwriter who has performed throughout the Northeast and overseas as a part of American Music Abroad; and Bob Fernald, a Portsmouth native with a background in business, who overcame fear and adversity to become one of the few swimmers in the world to earn the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming.
In addition to the talks, attendees will also get the chance to try their hand at interactive art-making experiences set up by Circulus Arts. These will include both individual and collaborative pieces, with each exploring the event’s overarching theme of “On Your Own Terms”.
With such a diversity of perspectives and opportunities, it’s no wonder the greater Portsmouth community is as excited about this opportunity as we are, with tickets selling out within just three hours of going on sale! But TEDxPiscataquaRiver’s goal and Swell Media’s hope is to spread these conversations well beyond just the 200 ticketholders and speakers present, so there will be a free Live Watch Party at the Portsmouth Public Library covering the whole event. There will also be the option to stream the talks live from the TEDxPiscataquaRiver homepage or to view them later once they’ve been uploaded.
Portsmouth’s enthusiasm to collaborate, innovate, and overcome challenges together is what makes Swell Media so happy to call the city home. It’s also why we’re so excited to work with such a progressive organization as TEDxPiscataquaRiver, so that we can help provide Portsmouth the ideas and discussion it continues to thrive on.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
